Dior confirms Maria Grazia Chiuri’s exit

Dior on Thursday confirmed what just about everybody already knew — that Maria Grazia Chiuri “has decided to leave her position as creative director of women’s haute couture, ready-to-wear and accessories collections”.

She’s been with the house since 2016 as creative chief of the women’s collections and said in the official release (and an Instagram post) that she’s “delighted to have been given this extraordinary opportunity. I would like to thank Monsieur Arnault for placing his trust in me and Delphine [Arnault] for her support. I am particularly grateful for the work accomplished by my teams and the ateliers. Their talent and expertise allowed me to realize my vision of committed women’s fashion, in close dialogue with several generations of female artists. Together, we have written a remarkable and impactful chapter of which I am immensely proud”.

And Dior in turn said it “wishes to express its deepest gratitude to [her] after a wonderful collaboration”.

Delphine Arnault, who’s chairman and CEO of Christian Dior Couture, added her “warmest thanks to Maria Grazia Chiuri, who, since her arrival at Dior, has accomplished tremendous work with an inspiring feminist perspective and exceptional creativity, all imbued with the spirit of Monsieur Dior, which allowed her to design highly desirable collections. She has written a key chapter in the history of Christian Dior, greatly contributing to its remarkable growth and being the first woman to lead the creation of women’s collections.”

Her departure is just the latest in a series of big name moves than have made 2024/25 one of the most active periods for creative director ‘musical chairs’ ever.

For instance, her former co-creative chief when she was at ValentinoPierpaolo Piccioli — has just been named to the top creative post at Kering’s Balenciaga.

Meanwhile, Maria Grazia Chiuri leaves Dior with a strong legacy of generally-highly-praised collections with, as her soon-to-be-ex-employer said, “an inspiring feminist perspective”. That’s not something that’s necessarily easy in the world of ultra-high-end fashion.

There’s no news yet of her replacement but based on past experience, it may not be long coming.
